Lip Enhancement

Injectable fillers or implants add volume to enhance thin lips.

Lip Enhancement

Like every other part of the body, lips come in a variety of shapes and sizes. While some people may have had thin lips their whole lives, others may find that the contours of their lips have changed over time. Lip augmentation creates fuller, plumper lips to enhance your appearance.

Increasing Popularity of Lip Augmentation

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures have increased in popularity dramatically over the past few years. Lip enhancement is no exception. Performed most commonly via injection, lip enhancement offers a nonsurgical solution that helps people feel better about their look.

Part of the reason for the rising trend toward lip augmentation is the number of celebrities with distinctive lips themselves. Names like Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba and of course Angelina Jolie have become synonymous with full, generous lips. However, what looks beautiful on one face may not be the best option for another. That’s why a focus on customized results is key when considering lip enhancement.

Options for Lip Enhancement

There are a number of different options for lip enhancement. In the early days of lip augmentation, collagen fillers were the go-to choice for fullness. The preference today among most plastic surgeons and their patients is to use hyaluronate-based injectable fillers such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®. These soft tissue fillers feel and look natural, while creating precise contours. Since the results of injectable fillers wear off gradually over the course of several months, patients have the option to “try on” a new look without commitment.

Another option for lip enhancement is fat transfer. This approach first removes fat cells from a donor area of the patient’s body via liposuction. The fat is collected, usually from the thighs or abdomen, then treated and injected into the lips. The viable fat cells remain in the lips permanently, although touch-ups may be needed since the results are not as predictable as synthetic fillers.

It’s common to combine lip enhancement with additional procedures at the same time for a bigger impact. For example, while lip augmentation alone can improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, they can be more fully improved by including BOTOX® Cosmetic injections at the same time.

Recovery and Results

Recovery time following lip enhancement depends on the approach used to augment the lips. Fat transfer requires liposuction, so complete recovery will take longer although the lip enhancement will be apparent right away. Implants require an incision, so the healing process will take a little longer than enhancement performed with just injectables. Lip enhancement achieved with injectable fillers requires virtually zero downtime or recovery. However, some patients may notice bruising or swelling at the injection site for a few hours to a day or two after their appointment.

The final results of your lip augmentation from the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery of Central Texas will help your lips look fuller and more enhanced, yet still natural and beautiful. Lip enhancement can also improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth for a younger, smoother look.
