Breast Reduction Procedure

A breast reduction, also known as a reduction mammaplasty, is very similar to the breast lift procedure. Once the patient has been anesthetized, the surgeon begins by making three incisions: underneath the breast, around the areola, and vertically between the areola and the base of the breast, creating what is known as a "T-incision." This incision technique allows the surgeon easy access to the excess skin, fat, and other tissue, while also elevating the breast. For certain patients with minimal surgical needs and looking to minimize visible scarring, we also offer a vertical reduction without the "T-incision".

While similar to a breast lift, breast reduction often requires much more removal of excess tissue, so liposuction can be used to facilitate the process. Once the appropriate amount of excess material has been removed, the nipple and areola are shifted into their new, higher position on the breast; should it be necessary, the areola can also be reduced at this time. With the procedure nearly complete, the remaining skin is brought together to reshape the natural curves and contours of the breasts. The incisions are closed using sutures, helping the breasts to retain their new, smaller shape. Breast reduction requires about three to five hours to perform, depending on the case. Recovery can be done at home, and most patients are able to return to their normal routines within one to two weeks of surgery.
