The beauty of using breast implants for your augmentation procedure is that they can be customized to achieve a range of goals. Some women need to address subtle asymmetries, while others want a very noticeable, but natural, change in size. We offer a wide selection of implant types, sizes and profiles to customize a look that will meet your needs. In some cases, breast augmentation may be combined with a breast lift for even better results.
Saline implants have a silicone outer shell and are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. They can be placed either under the breast tissue alone, or under the muscle.
Saline breast implants offer a unique flexibility, since they can be adjusted after placement to fine-tune the final size. Since saline implants can also be inserted while deflated, much smaller incisions are needed. There is less chance that saline implants will develop a capsule of hardened scar tissue around them after surgery, called a capsular contracture. In the unlikely case that a saline implant develops a leak, the saline solution is harmlessly absorbed by the body. The patient often notices within just a few days if her implant has ruptured, which allows for rapid breast revision surgery to replace the faulty implant. Saline implants are also less expensive than their silicone gel counterparts.
Silicone gel implants are the popular choice for modern breast augmentation. The outer shells are made of silicone, and the implants are filled with a silicone gel. The texture of the gel has been compared to jelly, and is designed to stay in place even if the outer shell develops a breach. Some silicone gel implants use a highly cohesive form-stable silicone gel with a firmer feel. These have been referred to as “gummy bear” implants, and are often used in reconstructive breast surgery and breast implant revision.
Since silicone gel implants are not adjustable, they require a slightly larger incision for placement. However, this can be hidden in the natural fold below the breast.
Many women feel that the final result of silicone gel implants feels and looks more like natural breast tissue than saline implants. However, a beautiful outcome depends far more on the skill of your surgeon than the material of your implant. It’s important to make the choice that’s right for you.
Recovery and Results
Most of our Texas patients experience some initial discomfort like swelling and bruising right after receiving their breast implants. Using ice packs can help you feel more comfortable. You’ll notice a change in your profile immediately, even if you chose only a moderate implant size. As swelling continues to dissipate, your final results will become more visible. Most patients can return to work in a week or two.
