Seton Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is uniquely equipped to handle the full range of rhinoplasty cases, including reconstructive rhinoplasty. For patients whose noses are disfigured as a result of facial trauma, congenital defect, disease, or prior surgery, reconstructive rhinoplasty at our Advanced Facial Surgery Center in Central Texas can help. During extensive reconstruction surgery, other reconstructive procedures, such as blepharoplasty and face lift, may be performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty can resolve a host of nose conditions and deformities affecting the form and function of the nose. Surgical solutions are available to solve functional issues of the nose, such as obstructed airways, or provide transformative aesthetic improvements, as in the case of congenital deformities or trauma. Depending on the patient and the degree of reconstruction, autologous cartilage as well as bone and skin grafts can be used to create a new nose. In some cases, a flap technique similar to the one used in breast reconstruction may be utilized to take tissue from other areas of the face for the nasal reconstruction.
For those who desire cosmetic enhancement rather than functional or aesthetic reconstruction, the Plastic Surgery Center provides cosmetic rhinoplasty solutions for Central Texas residents. The surgeon makes several incisions within the nose to begin the closed rhinoplasty procedure; should the patient require open rhinoplasty, an additional incision is made across the columella (the narrow strip dividing the nostrils). An open rhinoplasty simply allows the surgeon greater access to the tip of the nose if needed. Once the appropriate incisions are made, the surgeon exposes the underlying cartilage and bone to begin the shaping process. As in reconstructive rhinoplasty, autologous bone, cartilage, and skin can be used to add shape and structure to the nose. If need be, excess bone and cartilage can be removed to create the desired shape. Once the reshaping has been completed, the incisions are closed using sutures. In most cases, the nostrils will be packed, and the bridge of the nose splinted to facilitate the healing process.
Recovery from rhinoplasty surgery can be done at home. Most patients are able to return to their normal routines within one to two weeks of surgery. Over the course of a year, the nose will continue to heal, settling into its new shape.
